Manic Panic hair color?

I have never used Manic Panic. I recently put some streaks in my hair that were supposed to be burgundy, but instead, they came out a light brown/coppery color. I was thinking I would like to use Manic Panic in a bright red, but don't know how lightened my hair has to be. How light do you usually have to get it for the color to show up?
