I want to refinish a hutch bought with a dark stain & heavy gloss coat-any help?strip or sand paper it? ?

The hutch is from the 70's and very dark & it has polyurethane or varnish on it - It's pine - I want to make it a creamy yellow with a distressed look- any suggestions??
